The Issue

For many of us, growing up, living in, and visiting St. Charles, we have always cherished the beauty and serenity of the Fox River. It has been a constant source of joy and recreation for our community, providing us with countless opportunities for fishing, boating, canoeing, and simply enjoying nature's wonders. However, our beloved river is now facing a grave threat – the potential removal of its dam.

The dam on the Fox River play a crucial role in maintaining its health and usability. They help regulate water levels throughout different seasons, especially ensuring sufficient water flow during drier periods. Additionally, the dam provides essential habitats for various aquatic species that call our river home, including Bald Eagles, hawks, ducks, turtles, fish, mussels and so much more.

Removing the dams would not only disrupt the delicate balance of our ecosystem but also have severe consequences for our community as a whole. Without it, we would also lose access to recreational activities such as boating, water sports, kayaking and canoeing that bring families together and promote an active lifestyle.

Moreover, this stretch of the Fox River has been used for competitive canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and rowing for the past 50 years. This type of competitive sport needs the deeper water the Fox River currently provides.

Removing the dam would also impact many business owners that are located along the Fox River.  One local business owner shared that during years of drought, he is able to keep his plant nursery running, due to accessing the water from the Fox to water his crops. Removal of the dam would put undue burden on business owners like this, and the potential of having to close their doors.

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has proposed to remove 9 dams along the Fox River, beginning with the Carpentersville Dam. The evidence presented does raise some accuracy concerns around information provided regarding current wildlife numbers, the long-term financial impacts to riverfront property owners, and water levels that will remain. There are also concerns around the estimated cost of the project.

The USACE has been limited in answering presented questions regarding the proposal, which also raises large concerns from community members.

By signing this petition today, you are voicing your support for saving the St. Charles Dam from removal. We urge local authorities and decision-makers to consider alternative solutions that address concerns about the dams' safety and maintenance, without sacrificing the invaluable benefits they provide to our community.

Let us come together as residents of St. Charles and the Fox Valley and those who love the river to protect our beloved Fox River and preserve its rich heritage for future generations. Sign this petition now and help safeguard our community's lifeline!

We do ask if you have already signed a physical petition, please refrain from signing again.

Thank you for your support.
