Save the English Language Institute at Pitt
The Issue
Sign this petition today to tell the University of Pittsburgh that you support the English Language Institute (ELI).
The ELI has been teaching students English as a Second Language since 1964, which has included over 14,000 students from over 130 countries. Not only is the ELI equipped with intelligent and resourceful professors and staff to improve students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, they also assist international students with college applications and visa procedures.
International students are given the opportunity to make friends and learn english with students from all over the world. The ELI has had a huge impact on everyone who has taken part in it. Pitt Student Volunteers have the opportunity to help international students with their conversing skills in a classroom setting or with a single partner. I was able to volunteer with the ELI in the Fall of 2022 and I believe that it gave me the opportunity to learn about so many different cultures, make an impact in my community, and make lifelong friends with students from all around the world.
Students at the ELI have curated a statement that they would like to share as well:
"We are students of ELI in Pitt. We are against the closure of ELI. We have learned a lot here, improved our English skills, and made many good friends. The teachers here are friendly, serious, patient, and enthusiastic, and they take good care of us. Not only learning English, but also life and future planning. Take me as an example, I didn’t dare to speak English before, even though I knew a lot of words, I never had the confidence to speak English. After coming here, with the help of teachers and the efforts of friends, I began to have confidence in speaking English. ELI is divided into levels 3, 4, 5, and 6. There is no such scientific and detailed division in other places. I am a student of level 4. After I passed the final exam, I entered the next stage of study. This is a systematic learning process, and I don’t want to interrupt it. There are many activities here to help me directly improve my English, understand the University of Pittsburgh, know American culture, and Pitt‘s ELI is the best place for me."
If the ELI is closed, students will no longer be given the chance to improve their English at the University of Pittsburgh and Pitt students will not be able to partake in such an amazing volunteer experience.
If you want to support the ELI in other manners, email Provost Cudd and Dean Blee on why you want the ELI to stay at Pitt, or donate using the link below.
