Save the Des Moines Creek Trail Wetlands and Forest - Des Moines, WA

The Issue

I am concerned and oppose to the proposed construction of a 402,380 square foot industrial building off of 216th and 20th in Des Moines WA, as outlined in the Notice of Master Plan, Variance, and Short Plat Alteration Applications (LUA2022-0044 Project Details). The plans to fill in the wetlands and reroute a Type Ns stream are deeply troubling for several reasons.

Wetlands are critical ecosystems that provide numerous environmental benefits, including water filtration, flood control, and habitat for diverse wildlife.  Wetlands naturally prevent flooding and coastal erosion and removing it puts residents homes at greater risk for landslides and floods. The proposed project threatens to destroy these benefits and will have a devastating impact on local biodiversity. In particular, I am worried about the fate of the owl family that resides in this area and the many other species that depend on this habitat for survival.

The construction project also poses a threat to the natural beauty and recreational value of the trail leading to the waterfront. This trail is a cherished part of our community, offering residents a place to connect with nature, build community, exercise, and unwind. The loss of the wetlands and the alteration of the stream would significantly diminish the quality of this natural space. Despite the city's neglect, the residents have maintained this trail by removing destructive ivy/blackberries, picking up trash, and removing storm debris from the trail.

I urge the City of Des Moines to reconsider the plans for this industrial building. We already have numerous industrial buildings, and it is not worth sacrificing such a vital natural resource for another. Instead, I advocate for alternative development plans that preserve the wetlands and protect the wildlife and natural beauty of our community.

Please consider the long-term environmental impact and the importance of preserving our natural habitats for future generations. I hope the city will prioritize the conservation of the wetlands and seek sustainable development solutions that respect and protect our environment.
