Save the CTA: Stop the CTA from Losing 40% of Service—Pass Transit Funding Now

The Issue

Chicago’s public transit is in crisis. The CTA, Metra, and Pace could lose up to 40% of their service starting in 2026 if the Illinois General Assembly doesn’t act by May 31.

Why? Because the emergency federal funding that kept transit alive during the pandemic is running out—and state lawmakers haven’t yet committed to replacing it.

Without new funding and reform, we’re facing:

  • Massive service cuts
  • Fewer trains and buses
  • Entire routes eliminated
  • Longer waits, more traffic, more pollution
  • More Chicagoans forced to buy cars they can’t afford

I moved to Chicago for the freedom to move. For the ability to live without a car. To spend less on gas, parking, and car payments. To get around quickly, safely, and affordably. The CTA isn’t just a utility—it’s a reason people live here. It connects us. It makes the city work.

That freedom is at risk. And once it’s gone, we may never get it back.

State legislators must pass HB1833/SB5—the Metropolitan Mobility Authority Act—to reform our transit system and unlock new funding. Without it, the Regional Transportation Authority has warned that service cuts will be severe.

We need lawmakers to act NOW.

Pass the MMAA. Fund the CTA. Save our right to move.
