Save The Vaquitas

Hello! My name is Milla Kostova, and I am creating this petition to save the critically endangered vaquitas. Vaquitas are the world’s rarest marine mammal on the edge of extinction. There are only about 10 individuals remaining. They are often caught and drowned in gillnets by illegal fishing operations, which are hunting the endangered totoaba. If fishing is not banned immediately, the vaquita will go extinct.  One quote from the Porpoise Conservation Society describes, "The totoaba, a large fish native to the Sea of Cortez, is entwined with the vaquita’s fate in a tangled web of illegal fishing, black-market demand, and a race against extinction." So, we will not only be saving the vaquitas, but also the endangered totoaba. Vaquitas need our help now! Vaquitas have a black ring around each eye and black curved lips that look like smiling pandas!

Why Do We Need to Protect Vaquitas?

The decline of vaquitas impacts the delicate balance of marine life in the Gulf of California, where vaquitas live.  It is important to protect their species and maintain the ecological balance. Vaquitas regulate the population of organisms like squid and small fish, so their disappearance would disrupt the food chain and will affect other species. Without Vaquitas, the future of the Gulf of California is unimaginable and certainly disastrous. Saving the vaquitas would give us a chance to prove that we can stop the disasters that are occurring on our planet, including global warming.

Why Do We Need to Act Now?

The vaquita is not the only marine mammal in trouble, and it hasn't been the first of the whale and dolphin family to go extinct in recent years. For example, the Baiji, or the Yangtze River Dolphin, was declared extinct when a survey mission failed to find an individual, and conservation efforts for the Baiji had failed. So, do we want a second species of cetacean to become extinct in our lifetime? The vaquita is a unique animal, and it is important to the ecosystem of the Gulf of California. The consequences of its disappearance are unknown. Its extinction is entirely preventable, and we must fight for the survival of the vaquitas!
