As you know, we have been fighting to save redwoods that the Sequoyah Country Club (SCC) has requested permission to destroy. Unfortunately, the City of Oakland Public Works Agency Tree Services Division approved their request. The tree removal permit by the SCC was to cut down 175 coast redwoods; however, the approved permit is allowing them to destroy 166 coast redwoods, 1 incense cedar, 2 deodar cedars, and 1 Monterey cypress. The City of Oakland has not provided any reason for the change in trees and has not required the SCC to submit a new permit. Moreover, each and every single tree that we originally requested that the SCC spare, the 15 surrounding Oak Hill and Sequoyah Roads, are slated for removal.

Despite many legal grounds for denial, the Tree Services Division pushed this permit through. We are now on a tight deadline to appeal. We are required to appeal by this Thursday, August 21st. The appeal fee is $1,465.63. We are also retaining experts to support our appeal, including an arborist.

These trees mean so much to the Sequoyah community and broader Oakland community. They are the backdrop to our daily lives. We hope that the City Council will hear our arguments and overturn the decision made in error by the Public Works Agency Tree Services Division.

Any contribution is deeply appreciated.
