Save the Clemmons Middle orchestra program

The Issue

We, students and members of the WSFCS community, are coming together to express our support for the CMS orchestra program. For many of us, orchestra is not just a class—it is where music becomes something we can actively take part in, rather than just listen to.

It is a space where we connect with music in a personal way and share that experience with others in our school community.

We are asking WSFCS and CMS leadership to preserve and fully support the orchestra program at Clemmons Middle School.

Orchestra gives students direct access to musical education and a meaningful creative outlet. Through music, students are able to express creativity, emotions, and ideas in a way that feels personal and real, while also connecting with peers through shared performance and collaboration.

Beyond the classroom, musical education helps students grow in ways that last a lifetime. It builds creativity, communication, confidence, and emotional expression—skills that shape students not just academically, but as well-rounded individuals.

At Clemmons Middle School, the orchestra program plays an important role in providing this opportunity. Removing or reducing it would take away a space where students are able to grow, express themselves, and experience music in a meaningful way.

We urge district members to maintain funding and staffing, as well as for support for the CMS Orchestra program so that it may continue to serve as a meaningful musical and creative opportunity for the students at Clemmons Middle School.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond. I believe this decision was made in response to the reduction in teacher allotments by the state. The decrease in the number of teachers is due to district-wide declining student enrollment. With fewer teachers, many principals hesitate to increase class sizes for the core classes, so non-core teachers are, reluctantly, reduced. This in no way reflects on the merit of the teacher or program, nor is it intended to be a referendum on music education. I fully understand and appreciate the importance of these programs as my children participated and benefited from them. Sadly, it is a financial decision that reflects the situation in which the school district is currently. I will continue to advocate for school-based positions, especially for programs that positively affect student attendance, behavior, and academic achievement. Leah
