Save the Brampton Library: Chinguacousy Branch

Save the Brampton Library: Chinguacousy Branch
The Issue
Together, we demand justice for those impacted by the TMU project (Toronto Metropolitan University, previously known as Ryerson University) at the Bramalea Civic Centre location (150 Central Park Dr, Brampton).
In January 2023, The City of Brampton announced that the city’s Bramalea Civic Centre (BCC) will be home to the new TMU School of Medicine which will open its doors in 2025. The City of Brampton has invested $20M of funding to this project. This branch is moving from a two-level space to The Ski Chalet by Chinguacousy Park which is a significantly smaller space. The following groups of individuals will be impacted and are not being considered in this project. Firstly, the loss of the recording studio will affect many young people's ability to get off the streets and pursue their passions. The seniors who live in the retirement buildings right by the BCC will also be affected by this project and should also be considered. The library currently has programs for seniors which are being eliminated without so much as a second thought. Are these seniors expected to walk 1.6 kilometers to get to the closest library that may or may not have programs to cater to their social needs? Will transportation be provided to the said library until an alternate solution is proposed by the Municipality? Have they considered all the children and families who live in all the Knightsbridge, King’s Cross, and Kensington buildings surrounding BCC, and let’s not forget those families who live in the buildings on Lisa Street, Silver Maple Crt, Clark Blvd, and surrounding areas? Were these individuals considered in these decisions? There is a daycare in BCC on the LL floor that caters to children of low-income families. Where will they go? Are they being supported? How about all the people who visit the Peel Public Health Clinic on the side facing Central Park Dr. We are limiting access to these resources for the locals. None of these groups of individuals were listed in any order of importance, just so you know.
Patrick Brown is limiting the people of Brampton’s access to a peaceful space to study and enjoy books by moving this library’s location. Both Patrick Brown and Doug Ford don’t seem to be concerned with all the wonderful organizations within that space. I’m not upset that he moved forward with a project to bring a Medical School to Brampton. Instead, I’m upset that he didn’t make plans or consider the groups of people that are affected by this project. They’re trying to solve a healthcare issue that should’ve been solved already. Brampton had 8 branches as of June 2023. As of August 2023, the City of Brampton will have 7 branches at our disposal. Although Mississauga has a similar population to Brampton, the city has a total of 18 branches. Hamilton, which has a lower population than both Mississauga and Brampton has 22 branches. We, collectively, need you to act now and speak up! The people in the Bramalea area of Brampton need you!
The current question remains: what is being done to replace this space that was originally constructed for the locals in Brampton? The Ski Chalet simply doesn't cut it. Its people’s tax dollars surely paid for its original construction. Where is the justice?
Can we count on you to sign this petition and/or to speak up in your own way?
