The Issue

Growing up with a deep love for the outdoors, there is a specific kind of silence that you can only find in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA). It isn't the absence of sound, but rather the presence of something ancient. It’s the rhythmic dip of a paddle into glass-calm water, the haunting call of a loon at dusk, and the scent of damp pine needles underfoot during a long portage.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is not just a destination; it's a treasure, profoundly important for its biodiversity, cultural heritage, and irreplaceable natural beauty. In 2023, the previous administration put a 20-year ban (a "mineral withdrawal") on mining across 225,000 acres of the Superior National Forest. This was intended to protect the watershed that flows directly into the BWCA. However, the Senate just voted 50–49 to use the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to strike that ban down.

The impact of this decision is massive and irreversible. Sulfide-ore mining has a 100% track record of pollution in environments like ours. The sulfuric acid and heavy metals produced by these mines don’t stay in one spot; they flow through our interconnected lakes, poisoning the drinking water and killing the wildlife that defines the region.

Furthermore, this is a net job killer. It threatens up to 22,000 sustainable jobs in the outdoor recreation, hospitality, and outfitting industries—businesses that have supported Minnesota families for generations. Because the Senate used this specific legal tool, the government is now legally prohibited from ever passing a similar ban again, creating a permanent threat to the wilderness.

This is simply not what the people want. Over 68% of Minnesota voters say protecting the Boundary Waters should be a top priority, and nearly 98% of the hundreds of thousands of public comments received during the environmental review favored the ban. This decision also ignores the treaty rights of Minnesota Tribes who have hunted, fished, and harvested wild rice in these waters for centuries. Politicians are prioritizing the interests of foreign mining conglomerates over the people who actually live, work, and hike here.

We need our politicians to act now before the damage is done.

Since the federal protections have been gutted, the Minnesota State Legislature must step up to create state-level bans on sulfide-ore mining within the watershed. We have to hold the leaders who used this backdoor trick accountable for bypassing years of public engagement and environmental study. A mine might last 20 years, but the damage lasts centuries. We must demand that our leaders prioritize our permanent natural heritage over temporary profits. The Boundary Waters is a national treasure, not a sacrifice zone.

Please sign this petition to demand stronger oversight and accountability measures to protect the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Together, we can make a difference.
