SAVE THE BOLINAS POST OFFICE!

SAVE THE BOLINAS POST OFFICE!
The Issue
After operating in Bolinas since 1863 – including the last 60 years in the same location – the USPS suddenly closed the Bolinas Post Office on March 3, 2023, for failing to renew its lease.
Services were “temporarily” moved to Olema, a 22-mile round trip requiring 40 minutes of drive time -- then later hastily relocated to Stinson Beach, a 12-mile round trip about 20 minutes away by car. There is no clearly identified alternative, no information on duration of closure, and no easy path to bring the Bolinas 94924 post office back home.
Due to a lack of viable relocation options in Bolinas, the swift suspension of operations with no public input, USPS funding challenges and trends in rural post office closures & consolidation, residents fear that the Bolinas Post Office is at risk of permanent closure.
Most Bolinas residents have no home delivery and rely on PO boxes. There is no direct public transportation to Olema. Our majority senior population, and most vulnerable low-income residents, are especially burdened. As an unincorporated small town with no municipal government, Bolinas has very few public services. The post office is a vital resource that connects us all – and our most critical community hub.
We Bolinas citizens and allies appeal for a firm pledge and active involvement from local, state and federal elected leaders, to support our resolution to Save the Bolinas Post Office, asking USPS district and regional leadership to:
1) Expedite return of Bolinas Post Office to a suitable temporary location within town, until a permanent new location is chosen and available.
2) Ensure a planning process that is more transparent, where the public is given clear and timely information, and opportunity to provide input on decisions regarding the Bolinas Post Office.
3) Sign a long-term lease, or develop a permanent facility, to ensure that the Bolinas Post Office remains securely in our community for the foreseeable future.
Please sign the petition today and share with friends, family and neighbors.
