Save The Black Horse, Chipping Barnet: List it as an Asset of Community Value
The Issue
The Black Horse in Chipping Barnet is one of our most cherished pubs. Founded in 1720, it has served countless generations of locals, and nearly everyone in Barnet has a fond memory of time spent there. The recent closure is a reminder that times are tougher than ever for pubs, and we can’t risk losing this one for good.
We’re calling on Barnet Council to list The Black Horse as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) under the Localism Act 2011. An ACV listing recognises that a building or piece of land has real social importance to the local community. For example, as a place for social gatherings, recreation, or cultural events.
If The Black Horse is listed as an ACV, it would help protect it for future generations. Should the pub ever be put up for sale, the community would have the right to be notified and a chance to bid for it – ensuring it isn’t quietly lost to redevelopment or conversion.
We’re launching this petition to show Barnet Council just how much The Black Horse means to local residents. ACV status depends on community support, and your signature will help demonstrate that this pub truly serves local people and deserves to be protected.
Last year, the council listed the Prince of Wales pub in East Barnet as an ACV in response to rumours that the former owners might sell pub and its site for residential or commercial development. The community didn’t end up buying the pub themselves, but the strong show of local support that came with ACV listing gave new investors confidence that it was a place worth saving. The Prince of Wales has since been bought and reopened by new owners Heartwood Inns and is thriving again.
