Save the Birhor Language – Protect Tribal Heritage
The Issue
As the creator of the Birhor Hindi English Dictionary, a project proudly included in the Bharatvani Project under the Ministry of Education, Government of Jharkhand, I have witnessed the joy and enthusiasm in the eyes of Birhor children when they saw their language in written form for the first time. This experience made me realize the crucial role education can play in preserving a language. However, the Birhor language is in danger of vanishing—a vital aspect of the cultural identity of Jharkhand's Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG).
The loss of the Birhor language would mean more than the disappearance of words; it would be the erasure of centuries of wisdom, stories, and a unique cultural identity. This is a preventable tragedy, but it requires immediate and cohesive action. Our demand is clear: we need the implementation of trilingual wall paintings in our Anganwadis (Birhor–Hindi–English), the creation and distribution of Birhor primers and pictorial dictionaries for children, and robust support for Birhor cultural projects.
The cultural richness of India is characterized by its diversity. Each language and dialect is a thread in the intricate tapestry that is India's heritage. By allowing this language to dissipate, we not only lose a cultural asset but also a piece of our collective history.
It's time for the government, educational institutions, and society at large to recognize the importance of preserving the Birhor language. By integrating the language into day-to-day learning environments such as Anganwadis, we can inspire a new generation of Birhor speakers who can proudly carry forward their ancestral legacy.
Join us in urging the Government of Jharkhand and educational policymakers to support our initiatives. Together, we can implement trilingual educational tools that not only serve as a foundational model for language preservation in India but also ensure that the Birhor language and culture are vibrant and thriving.
Sign this petition to stand with us in protecting one of India's irreplaceable tribal heritages and to help set a national precedent for the conservation of endangered indigenous languages.
