Save the Birds and Close Down Botanic Garden's Aviary
The Issue
As humans, we have a responsibility to protect and care for the creatures that share our planet. Unfortunately, there are many instances where we prioritise our entertainment, over the well-being of animals. One such example is seen in the Aviary at Botanic Gardens, where many beautiful birds are being kept in captivity purely for us to gaze at.
The enclosures are far too small, with very little enrichment. The environment is very cold and unnatural - comprising of concrete floors and wire walls. Some of the birds are even displaying signs of self mutilation and psychosis e.g. pull out their own feathers, pecking at their skin/feet, chewing at the cage.
It's time to take action and free these birds from their life of imprisonment. Help us send them to a suitable rehabilitation centre/sanctuary, where they can live out the rest of their lives to the fullest extent possible and close the aviary for good.
It may seem like a fun attraction for visitors, but we must remember that these birds are not there by choice. They are enslaved and being forced to live in these confined spaces, that in no way resemble their natural habitats.
Birds are social creatures that need to fly freely and interact with other birds in order to thrive. In captivity, they are denied these basic needs, which can lead to a range of health problems, including stress, anxiety, and depression.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that the birds can ever be reintroduced to their natural habitat since their captivity has deprived them of the opportunity to acquire natural behaviours and survival skills. However, by closing the aviary for good we can prevent future generations suffering from the same fate.
If you genuinely care for the welfare of animals, then I urge you to sign the petition to close the aviary and free the birds at Botanic Gardens.
