Save the Berney Arms: Protect Our Community, Our Heritage, and Our Future

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on the Broads Authority and relevant government bodies to immediately suspend enforcement actions threatening the homes of long-standing residents at the Berney Arms and Beauchamp Arms.

The residents are not only stewards of this precious landscape - they are the lifeblood keeping these historic sites alive. They have worked tirelessly to maintain the land, operate a café for passing boaters, and support community initiatives like Duke of Edinburgh wild camping - all while preserving public access to one of the Broads' most iconic and isolated locations.

Without these on-site workers, there is no realistic way to sustain these spaces. Evicting the residents guarantees the loss of vital community assets and kills the very future the Broads Authority claims to protect.

We recognize that the long-term vision for Berney Arms does not depend on static caravans. Our goal is a vibrant, community-led, environmentally sensitive regeneration of the site - a nature haven, heritage centre, and skills hub for future generations.

But right now, today, the presence of the residents is essential. Without them, the site will wither before it can be reborn.

We call for:

  • An immediate suspension of evictions at Berney Arms and Beauchamp Arms.
  • A meaningful, transparent dialogue between the Broads Authority, the Berney Arms Revival Trust, and the wider community.
  • A collaborative plan to protect homes, livelihoods, nature, and heritage—together.

The Broads belong to all of us. Stand with us to protect our community and shape a future that honours both people and place.
