Save Port Washington's Wetlands!

The Issue

Port Washington’s beautiful 240-acre wetlands holds many of Long Island’s most valuable environmental resources--yet it is in danger.

Threats such as illegal deforestation, wetland destruction, ATV use, water pollution, and human disturbance have placed this beautiful ecological sanctuary at risk. Possible sale and development of any part of this wild land will threaten animal life such as red fox, wood ducks, box turtles, and even a rare green heron rookery. Habitats such as the red maple forest, pin-oak forest, wet meadows, and clay bluffs will also be placed in grave danger.

These wetlands also contain a vital freshwater wetland that may very well prevent salt-water from Hempstead Harbor from intruding into some of Long Island's drinking water aquifers. If this area is developed irresponsibly,  a critical element of our drinking-water may also be placed at risk.

We must prevent this from happening...

Please sign this petition to ask the town of North Hempstead to protect the Port Washington wetlands and its wild environs. We ask that the town create an official Nature Sanctuary that would ensure these lovely wetlands' long-term ecological health and minimally impinge upon its wildlife.

Please sign now to protect this beautiful, wild land!
