The Issue
For nearly 60 years, The Badger pub on Brockwell Lane has stood as a cornerstone of our local community in Chesterfield. It's not just a building — it's where friendships have been made, memories created, and generations brought together.
Now, The Badger faces demolition. A planning application has been submitted to replace this cherished pub with up to nine houses. If approved, we lose not just bricks and mortar, but one of the last true community spaces in our area.
As a local resident who has used the pub for over 35 years, I know first-hand the role The Badger has played in bringing people together — from quiz nights and live music to quiet pints after work and Sunday dinners with family. It’s a space that offers warmth, familiarity, and a sense of belonging.
The pub has been operated by a small, passionate local consortium — The Thirsty Badger Company Ltd — for the past 11 years. They fought to save it once and kept it going for as long as they could. But now, the owners are seeking to demolish the pub, claiming there's no appetite or viability to keep it running.
We believe there is another way forward.
- The Badger has not even been listed for sale as a going concern, meaning potential new operators haven’t had the opportunity to step in and revitalise it.
- Up-and-coming pub chains and independent publicans are making a success out of these types of estate pubs when given the chance.
- Many local residents feel that The Badger has been intentionally run down in recent years, possibly to pave the way for demolition. That’s not fair on the community, or on those who might have stepped in to save it.
- The building remains viable and full of potential — but if it’s lost, it’s lost forever.
We are calling on:
Chesterfield Borough Council to reject the application to demolish The Badger.
The current owners to pause plans and offer the pub for sale to the open market as a going concern before pursuing irreversible development.
