SAVE THE “BACKBONE OF LUZON”: PROTECT SIERRA MADRE RANGE FROM KALIWA DAM PROJECT
The Issue
THE BACKBONE OF NATURE’S PROTECTION
The Sierra Madre is the backbone of Luzon for a reason. It is nature’s shield of many cities in the Luzon part of the Philippines. This mountain range is the longest in the country and is responsible for taking care of and keeping us safe from natural disasters. It can't stop the typhoon from coming to our places but it has the big role of reducing the strength and absorbing the worst of it.
One of the latest things that how the Sierra Madre saved us was how this mountain range turned the super typhoon Karding into a typhoon in many places in Luzon. On September 26, 2022, the sun shone brightly and the morning was surprisingly calm in Metro Manila. It was like Noah’s Ark the day after the great flood. This was perhaps no coincidence, a fitting reminder that the mountain range saved us from more damage the typhoon could have brought upon us.
SIERRA MADRE MOUNTAIN RANGE INTO KALIWA DAM PROJECT
A big announcement shocked a lot of people, especially the Filipinos who are concerned about the precious mountain range we called the Sierra Madre. It is because of the Kaliwa Dam Project which was China-funded that the Philippine Government supported in 2012. This project is for the "long-term" solution to the expected happenings in the Philippines which can face longer dry seasons causing the shortage of water supply specifically in Metro Manila. So the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte conceived the PHP12.2 billion Kaliwa Dam Project. In the 1970s, it was projected that because of population density, the water supplied by the 60-year-old Angat Dam will no longer be able to sustain the needs of people residing in the Metro. The dam is currently the main water reservoir that supports Metro Manila, Cavite, Rizal, and its neighboring provinces.
It is said that this project will save a lot of provinces and many places in the city from water interruption. But will it be really worth it?
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF KALIWA DAM PROJECT
There are a lot of negative effects of the Kaliwa Dam Project but the biggest problem that it can give is that it can destroy Sierra Madre biodiversities.
- The making of this watershed needs a lot of money and time. This can result in wasting opportunities in making other useful things with the use of that money and thinking of more suitable or effective solutions. It can also take years before finishing so a lot of natural catastrophes can still happen.
- Many animals are living there which means if we destroy this mountain range then we also destroy their habitats. This event can result in the endangerment and extinction of a bunch of animal species.
- Also, Sierra Madre holds hectares of land that have forests and plants. These natural resources can be beneficial to the world, especially to humans. Some plants can only be found in the area of Sierra Madre. So let's protect this nature including the beautiful creatures of God.
- But most importantly, this mountain range protected and still protects us from natural disasters like super typhoons. It became our shield for many years that keep Luzon, particularly the people here, from floods, landslides, and Habagat that will surely destroy our things and places if not prevented.
In conclusion with all the things that we've already discussed here about the negative effects of this watershed project, thus, the kaliwa dam should not be built.
ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR THE WATER SUPPLY THAN HAVING THE KALIWA DAM BUILT
"NO to Kaliwa Dam, YES to Alternative Sources of Water" this quote should be spread to the world.
- Let's say instead of building a watershed, why not just find a solution in stopping Climate Change and Global Warming that reduces the water in dams? Because in the first place, it is the reason why they want to build a new large dam.
- We can also suggest making the other dams in the Philippines larger and repairing them so they will improve and carry more water to be distributed to many places or provinces.
- Watershed forest conservation which we can start looking for ways on how we can keep and take care of the current forests from the existing watersheds.
- Explore and apply new technologies so we can use these to recycle water. This solution is more affordable and practical for both people and the environment.
- Applying and strengthening water conservation policies. The government should not just be thinking of solutions that include spending money. They can make laws of giving importance to the existing dams and the water so we can preserve it. In this way, there are more possibilities that we can survive the long dry seasons.
