Save the B44 Bus Route: the only central Brooklyn north to south bus

The Issue

Dear MTA,

We, the undersigned, are writing to express our strong support for keeping the Local B44 bus route on New York Avenue and the final stop at Williamsburg Bridge Plaza. The proposed changes will cut the length of the route, serving less of our community, and include fewer stops.

The B44 bus is the third highest ridership bus in Brooklyn, and changing its route would have a devastating impact on our community of 300,000 people who live within 0.25 miles of the B44.

The B44 is a critical lifeline for many seniors on New York Avenue. Many of our older neighbors rely on the B44 to shop for groceries and essential services in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Removing the B44 would require them to take the B49 and then transfer to another bus at Fulton Avenue to continue to Bedford-Stuyvesant and Williamsburg. A bus transfer is unnecessary, inconvenient, and would disproportionately impact our seniors and communities of color.

The B44 is also the only bus that runs directly between Williamsburg and Sheepshead Bay. Additionally, it is one of the few bus lines that serves the New York Avenue corridor, which is home to a diverse and vibrant community. Removing the existing B44 route and replacing it with the proposed B49 route would make it much more difficult for citizens in Flatbush and Crown Heights to get to Bedford-Stuyvesant and Williamsburg for work, services and pleasure.

We urge you to reconsider your plans to move the Local B44.

In witness whereof, we have signed our names on the dates indicated next to our signatures.

Sincerely,

Phillips W. Mitchell and Jessica Chase
