The Issue

Having seen the recent plans for the new Ashfield School build, I am heartbroken to see there is no new theatre included. This is more than just disappointing — it’s a massive loss for the students, the community, and the cultural identity of the school.

As someone who studied and performed at Ashfield, and now works in drama education across Nottinghamshire, I’ve seen firsthand how the arts are constantly under threat from funding cuts. Drama is so often the first subject to be sacrificed, and yet it’s one of the most powerful tools we have for building confidence, community, and future careers.

Ashfield School has always been known for its annual December shows — a highlight of the year for students and local families alike. People across the district know about them. I’ve even been recognised in random places simply for being in a 2017 production. These performances aren’t just school events — they are a source of pride, connection, and inspiration.

The theatre isn’t just a performance space — it’s a safe haven for so many students. For some, it's the only place they feel seen, valued, or even safe from difficulties at home or school. To take that space away isn’t just a logistical issue — it’s a moral one.

Where are students supposed to perform? In a hall with no lighting, no stage, no wings, no curtains? Imagine telling PE students they’ll never go outside again because there’s no field — it would never happen. So why is it acceptable to strip away a dedicated space from students whose passion lies in the arts?

Ashfield has helped launch many careers — including mine. I’ve just appeared in my first feature film, and I credit the drama department and the school theatre for giving me the belief I could succeed. Others have made it to the West End. And of course, James Graham, one of the UK’s most acclaimed playwrights and screenwriters, is a proud member of the Ashfield alumni. Would he have believed he could get where he is today without access to a dedicated space to explore and nurture his talent — a theatre?

Removing the theatre removes part of what makes Ashfield Ashfield. It sends a damaging message — that creative futures don’t matter, and that working-class kids shouldn’t dream too big. That is unacceptable.

We ask those with the power to reconsider. Please do not strip the heart out of Ashfield School. Reinstate a dedicated theatre space. Give future generations the same opportunities so many of us had.
