The Issue

The historic Highland Park neighborhood is characterized by its huge old trees, which bring an irreplaceable feeling of the forest to the city. Two of these huge, gnarly beauties are (Edit: were recently, see updates below, great news!) at risk of being cut down at 8 am on Monday, March 3rd ; despite being clearly healthy and full of new spring leaves! Instead, they are only in need of a trim of about 6 dead branches.
They provide invaluable cooling in the Alabama heat, the US Department of Energy reports that air temperatures directly under trees can be as much as 25°F cooler than air temperatures above nearby blacktop.According to the Arbor Day Foundation, a single large tree can supply a day's worth of oxygen for up to four people; and in one year a mature tree will absorb more than 48 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.  In addition, such mature trees provide abundant habitat for pollinators and birds. Local activism counts the most, your voice can make a difference! These vote for these trees belongs to us all! Thank you so much

Update, 3-1-25: Thank you! Your Nature activism worked! I received word from the City that the trees will not be cut down and that they will just be trimmed. Everyone’s signatures are very powerful!  Let’s continue to gather signatures. It is great to know your voices are being heard. As of right now, the news is that: even though the city arborist believes the trees are diseased and should come down; upon receiving photos, the City has decided not to cut the trees down and just trim the 6 dead branches, as an alternative solution for now. We can continue to learn more about the fuller situation of the trees' health and needs. Any information or help that anyone would like to contribute would be greatly appreciated.

We appreciate the city arborist’s work and dedication. The more voices that are added to the petition - the more the City will understand how important our trees are to this neighborhood. Please spread this great news! Rojo is very grateful for everybody’s participation, they love trees too. Rojo has been active in planting native pollinators, and new trees throughout the neighborhood. We are all grateful for their community participation! Let’s all celebrate at Rojo and thank them! Big thanks to Mayor Randall Woodfin, our City Arborist, the Highland Park Association officers, and the volunteers of the Highland Park Beautification Committee. All of them are dedicated to saving our trees.
