Save the 3 Jackson Bus in San Francisco

Save the 3 Jackson Bus in San Francisco
The Issue
In 2020, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) stopped the 3 Jackson MUNI bus line that provided public transit to many neighborhoods for over 100 years.
Without the 3 Jackson line many areas of San Francisco suffer for lack of viable east-west public transportation, namely Lower Nob Hill, The Fillmore District, Pacific Heights, Presidio Heights, Cathedral Hill and Japantown. The 3 Jackson bus is essential for navigating the steep San Francisco hills of these neighborhoods.
The 3 Jackson line brings needed customers to the Union Square shopping district, as well as, to family-owned businesses and restaurants along the Post-Sutter Street corridor and Fillmore Street. Plus, no other east-west MUNI route takes residents to the heart of the Financial District.
The 3 Jackson bus line will reduce traffic congestion in alignment with The City’s Transit-First Policy and help fight climate change while providing access to essential services. The 3 Jackson route also provides residents access to their workplace, medical attention, education and places of worship. It travels directly to the Sutter Health CPMC Medical Center on Van Ness Avenue, within one block from the 450 Sutter Street medical/dental offices at Union Square and past many senior residences.
Some residents, particularly the elderly and disabled, who relied on the close proximity of the 3 Jackson bus have been stranded for more than two years. Many San Franciscans do not own a vehicle or are unable to drive a vehicle. Many workers cannot afford to pay expensive daily parking.
The loss of the 3 Jackson line forces residents to take two bus lines, and sometimes three bus lines, to their destination increasing the likelihood of safety issues for vulnerable populations, particularly after dark. Residents should not have to transfer buses multiple times when it only takes one bus - the 3 Jackson.
At a time when the City of San Francisco is struggling to bring residents and visitors downtown to Union Square and the Financial District, SFMTA should commit to bringing back the expedient 3 Jackson.
We ask that the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) restore the 3 Jackson MUNI bus line no later than 2023 on a schedule no less frequent than every 10 minutes up to 10:00pm and announce the date when the 3 Jackson will be brought back to service.
Those who depend on the 3 Jackson bus include:
· Senior citizens
· Disabled citizens
· Healthcare workers
· Hotel and restaurant workers
· Downtown retail and Financial District office workers
· Students, plus the teachers and staff that keep schools running
· Businesses, retailers, restaurants and hotels that line the 3 Jackson route
Supporters of saving the 3 Jackson bus include:
· Catherine Stefani, SF Board of Supervisors, District 2
· Aaron Peskin, SF Board of Supervisors, District 3
· Dean Preston, SF Board of Supervisors, District 5
