The Issue

We, the residents and concerned citizens of Thane, strongly oppose the construction of the proposed Amazon data centre on 54 acres of land in Balkum.

At a time when Thane's residents are struggling with water shortages and are forced to ration water for basic daily needs such as drinking, cooking, bathing, and sanitation, it is unacceptable that Thane Municipal Corporation is reportedly set to supply 12 million litres of recycled water to an upcoming Amazon data centre.

Our concerns do not end with water.

The proposed data centre is surrounded by residential complexes, schools, hospitals, and other community infrastructure within a one-kilometre radius. Thousands of families, children, patients, and senior citizens will have to live alongside a massive industrial-scale facility operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Even more alarming is the apparent absence of a publicly known Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) before work began. Residents deserve transparency and accountability. No project of this scale should proceed without a thorough assessment of its impact on the environment, public health, local infrastructure, and quality of life.

Data centres generate enormous amounts of heat and require extensive cooling systems. The resulting increase in local temperatures will worsen the already harsh and rising heat conditions experienced by Thane residents.

Furthermore, the constant operation of cooling equipment, generators, and industrial machinery is expected to create a continuous humming noise that may reach levels as high as 90 decibels. Unlike ordinary construction noise, this disturbance will not stop at night. It will be a permanent presence in the lives of nearby residents.

We refuse to accept a future where:

- Residents face water shortages while millions of litres are diverted to a private facility.

- Families are subjected to constant industrial noise.

- Schools and hospitals are forced to operate next to a massive data centre.

- Local temperatures rise further due to industrial heat generation.

- Large-scale development proceeds without proper environmental scrutiny.

We call upon the authorities to immediately halt further development until all environmental, social, and public welfare concerns have been fully examined and addressed.
