The Issue

Sweet Joanna’s Cafe in San Francisco is more than just a place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a nice meal; it is a community landmark that has brought people together for decades. Nestled in the lower FIDI, Sweet Joanna's is renowned for its delightful cuisine and welcoming atmosphere, but also for being an integral part of the local community.

Unfortunately, due to the University Of San Francisco’s building management, Sweet Joanna's is abruptly at risk of closing its doors permanently. The potential loss of this cherished cafe would not only deprive the community of a beloved gathering spot but also impact the livelihoods of its dedicated staff and the local suppliers who rely on the business.

USF's June 8, 2026 letter demands the cafe surrender the premises by June 30. Owned by Joseph Abughosh since 1992, this family-run, immigrant success story has thrived for 35 years and is beloved by its patrons, an award-winning recipient of a U.S. Senate Commendation, a San Francisco Certificate of Honor, Congressional Recognition, and the USF Gellert Family Business Award. It is a travesty for USF to kill a thriving, community-loved business. Please do the right thing and save the legacy of Sweet Joanna's.

By saving Sweet Joanna's Cafe, we are preserving a piece of our community's heart and culture. We urge you to sign this petition to encourage the City of San Francisco to take active steps in protecting Sweet Joanna's Cafe and ensure that it remains a fundamental part of SoMa.

Please sign this petition to help save Sweet Joanna's Cafe. Your support can make a difference in keeping our beloved community cafe alive for future generations.
