The Park United Presbyterian Church at 4802 6th Ave. in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, is being converted into a 23-unit residential building.

Growing up in Sunset Park, my neighborhood has always found solace and community within the sacred walls of the historic church located at 4802 Sixth Ave. This church has been more than just a building for our community—it has been a beacon of hope, a place of worship, and a foundational element of our neighborhood's rich history. It is a sanctuary where generations have found comfort and unity.

However, our beloved church is now at risk of being converted into 23 residential housing units after 2 years of vacancy despite being an integral part of Sunset Park's historical district.

The rise of unregulated and unaffordable housing developments in our area is alarming. While housing is essential, it should not come at the cost of cultural heritage and community identity. Moreover, this change seems to prioritize profit over people, favoring developments that may not even be affordable or accessible to the local residents. The preservation of our places of worship is crucial to maintaining the integrity and authenticity of our neighborhood.

We must stand together to protect the historical, cultural and spiritual fabric of Sunset Park. We urge the local government and stakeholders to reconsider this decision.
