The Issue

Stockport's only designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is a precious natural habitat that requires immediate intervention. In January 2025, Stockport Council assumed management responsibilities from the Cheshire Wildlife Trust, yet the site has since been neglected. The Council received a detailed 80-page management plan from the Trust, which was created to ensure the preservation and enhancement of this vital ecological area. Despite this guidance, the site has suffered significant degradation.

A major concern is the breach between Keg Pool and the River Etherow, which has caused extensive damage to the ecosystem. The lack of management has exacerbated this issue, jeopardizing the diverse flora and fauna that thrive here. Without urgent action, we risk losing a unique and irreplaceable part of Stockport's natural heritage.

The SSSI is an area of national importance, recognized for its biological diversity and value to researchers, educators, and nature enthusiasts. It is home to rare species, and its degradation would mean the loss of invaluable educational and scientific opportunities. Furthermore, its preservation is essential for the local community’s enjoyment and environmental education.

We call upon Stockport Council to act immediately to halt further deterioration. We propose the following steps to address the crisis: allocate resources to reinforce the breach, restore the natural habitats, and fully implement the Cheshire Wildlife Trust's management plan. Additionally, appoint a dedicated team to oversee the site's maintenance and improvement, ensuring it remains a haven for biodiversity.

This is not just about preserving nature; it is about fulfilling our responsibility to future generations. Sign this petition to urge Stockport Council to protect this vital environmental asset and ensure its survival for years to come. Together, we can save our SSSI and champion the conservation of Stockport's natural beauty. Please sign and share this petition to help save our precious SSSI.
