Growing up in Streator, IL, I have always been surrounded by the rich history and vibrant culture of our community. One place that holds a special place in my heart is St Stephen's Church. This beautiful church has not only served as a spiritual sanctuary for generations but has also played an integral role in the lives of many Slovak Catholic families, including my own.

My personal connection to St Stephen's Church runs deep. My father was a student in one of the first graduating classes from St Stephen's school, and throughout the years, this church has witnessed countless milestones and cherished moments for my family. From weddings to Baptisms, First Communions to Confirmations, Funeral Masses to Christmas Eve Midnight masses – each occasion celebrated within its walls holds immense sentimental value.

Sadly, it has come to my attention that there are plans to close or even demolish this historic church. This news deeply saddens me and many others who hold dear memories within its sacred space. Therefore, I urge the Peoria Diocese to recognize the significance of St Stephen's Church as an essential part of our community's history and preserve it as a designated historical landmark.

St Stephen's Church stands as a testament to our Slovak Catholic heritage and serves as an important cultural symbol for Streator residents. Its architectural beauty showcases intricate craftsmanship from another era while providing solace and spiritual guidance for those seeking comfort during difficult times.

Furthermore, preserving St Stephen's Church will contribute significantly to tourism in our area by attracting visitors interested in exploring historical landmarks with cultural significance. The economic benefits resulting from increased tourism can help revitalize our community while honoring our collective past.

Accordingly, I implore the Peoria Diocese to consider alternative solutions rather than closing or demolishing this beloved institution. By working together with local preservation organizations and seeking public support, we can find creative ways to ensure the long-term preservation of St Stephen's Church.
