Save SSU Performing Arts
The Issue
Sonoma State University announced on January 22, 2025 that 46 faculty would lose their jobs, and the elimination of six departments. SSU currently faces a $20+ million budget deficit as a function of falling enrollment over the past 6-7 years. However, we stabilized this year and the estimates were that from here on out, there would be steady though slow growth.
As students of the department of Theatre Arts and Dance at Sonoma State University, we face the impending disbandment of our community, due to recent budget cuts. We are not merely classmates - we are a tightly knit group of artists, bound by a shared passion for creativity and expression. These cuts threaten not just our education, but the vibrant community formed around these shared pursuits.
Sonoma State University is highly regarded for its diverse and dynamic population of students and programs. However, the recently proposed budget cuts stand to dismantle an otherwise thriving and essential institution. With the current political instability and the targeting of marginalized groups, our community needs the arts more now than ever before. History has shown us that the arts are not only a reflection of society, but also a lifeline. They provide an avenue for expression, a platform for marginalized voices, and a means of reflecting on the human condition—something that feels even more crucial during times of uncertainty.
This proposed measure harms the current students and staff and robs future generations of passionate, artistic individuals of the opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute meaningfully to the arts and society. We cannot let this be our reality.
Join us in urging the decision-makers at Sonoma State University to reconsider this budget cut. By signing this petition, you lend your voice in support of preserving the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance. Together, we can ensure that this family of artists continues to share and inspire through their passion for years to come. Please sign our petition now.
