Save Spring Street Park

Save Spring Street Park
The Issue
Dear Councilmember Kevin de León and DLANC,
We, the undersigned, are residents, students, business owners, and community members concerned about the current state and future potential of Spring Street Park, a pivotal space in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles's Historic Core.
Background:
Spring Street Park, surrounded by significant landmarks such as The Last Bookstore, Citizen M hotel, residential condos and apartments, the Art Center College of Design gallery, and the new UCLA campus at the Trust Building, is a central community asset with untapped potential. This park could serve as a vibrant hub for hotel visitors, college students, and local residents, enhancing the neighborhood's cultural and social fabric.
Current Challenges:
Regrettably, the park has been in decline over the past two years following the cessation of funding for security. This has led to increased vandalism, open drug activity, and an atmosphere of insecurity that deters families, visitors, and residents from enjoying the space. This situation not only diminishes the quality of life in the neighborhood but also misses an opportunity to elevate the community experience.
Request for Action:
We respectfully request the following actions from your offices:
- Restore and Enhance Security:
Allocate funds to reinstate and enhance park security, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all. - Community Engagement and Revitalization Programs:
Initiate programs that involve local residents, businesses, and institutions in the park's revitalization. This could include cultural events, educational activities, and community-led beautification projects. - Infrastructure and Maintenance Upgrades:
Invest in the park's infrastructure, including improved landscape lighting, maintenance to prevent vandalism and encourage usage, and the restoration of the grassy ellipse at the center of the park. - Long-Term Sustainability Plan:
Develop a long-term plan for the park's sustainability, including ongoing funding for security and maintenance, to ensure that the park remains a valuable asset for the community.
Conclusion:
Spring Street Park represents a unique opportunity for your offices to positively impact a key area of Downtown Los Angeles. By taking action, you can help transform the park into a thriving community space that reflects the dynamic spirit of our neighborhood.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
