Save Special Education in Pitman Schools

Save Special Education in Pitman Schools
The Issue
Dear Governor Murphy,
I am writing to you as a concerned parent within the Pitman community to express my deep distress regarding the budgetary challenges facing our school district. The recent proposal for the 2024-2025 budget, coupled with the introduction of Bill A-4161, has placed our district in an untenable position that threatens the quality of education for all students, particularly those receiving special education services.
I understand the fiscal constraints that our state and local governments must navigate, but I cannot overstate the impact that these decisions will have on our children and their educational opportunities. The proposed reduction in special education services is particularly troubling, as it not only undermines the progress we have made in supporting students with disabilities but also raises serious concerns about our district's compliance with federal laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and The Beadleston Act.
As the leader of our state, I urge you to consider the broader implications of these budgetary decisions on our community's most vulnerable students. While I recognize the need for fiscal responsibility, I firmly believe that we must prioritize investment in education and ensure that all students have access to the resources and support they need to succeed.
Furthermore, I implore you to reconsider the introduction of Bill A-4161, which could further exacerbate the challenges facing our school district and place an undue burden on taxpayers. Rather than resorting to short-term fixes that compromise the quality of education for our children, I urge you to work with stakeholders to develop sustainable, long-term solutions that prioritize the needs of our students and promote equity and inclusion in education.
In closing, I appeal to your sense of duty to the children of our state and ask that you take immediate action to address the budgetary challenges facing our school district. Our children deserve nothing less than a high-quality education that prepares them for success in school and in life, and I urge you to stand with us in support of their right to a bright and promising future.
Sincerely,
Renee McCrady
