Save South Grove Golf Course, Oldest Inner City Municipal Course in Indiana
Why this petition matters
South Grove Golf Course is scheduled to be closed by the city at the end of 2024. This golf course is located just west of downtown, in the middle of a lower income area. This closure is a land and money grab from this community. The course has been open since 1902, and has been an accessible to all walks of life. This is one of the oldest municipal courses in the country, with massive trees to reflect its age. It has hosted a spring tournament for the last 75 years. It hosts high school teams for practices and matches every year. It is well maintained, and has kept the cost low to encourage everyone to play. The closure is part of a plan to redevelop the area, which also including closing riverside golf course 3 years ago. There has been minimal progress on developing that land to this point, and closing another golf course that serves the inner city will only hurt that community more. The course stays busy, and can even be played in the winter months, weather permitting. South Grove should be kept open, and should be used by the city even more for outreach to the youth in the surrounding area. Save South Grove Golf Course, stop the land and money grab!
