Save Somerset Hall: Preserve the Unity of CIVICUS Living and Learning Community

The Issue

As a proud member of the CIVICUS Living and Learning Community at the University of Maryland, I am deeply concerned about the proposed changes that would force us to relocate from our beloved home in Somerset Hall. This petition aims to rally support and urge the university administration to reconsider this decision, as it would disrupt our tight-knit community and undermine the promises made to us when we joined this program.

Somerset Hall is not just a building; it is a place where friendships are forged, ideas are exchanged, and civic engagement thrives. When I first joined CIVICUS, I was drawn to its mission of fostering active citizenship and making positive change in society. However, what truly sealed my commitment was knowing that I would have two years guaranteed in Somerset Hall – a space specifically designed for our community's unique needs.

Living in Somerset Hall has been an incredible experience. The small size of this building has allowed me to connect on a deeper level with my classmates who share similar passions for social justice, community service, and civic leadership. Whether it's late-night discussions about current events or collaborative projects aimed at addressing local issues, these interactions have enriched my college experience beyond measure.

When we enrolled in CIVICUS Living and Learning Community, we were assured two years of housing in Somerset Hall. Changing this arrangement now would not only be unfair but also breach the trust between students and university administration.

The intimate environment provided by Somerset Hall allows us to build lasting relationships with like-minded individuals who inspire us daily. Relocating would scatter our community across different buildings on campus – diminishing opportunities for collaboration and shared experiences.

CIVICUS students actively engage with the College Park community through service projects, internships, and partnerships with local organizations. Somerset Hall's location enables us to make a meaningful impact on the surrounding area more effectively.

By signing this petition, you are standing in solidarity with current and future members of CIVICUS Living and Learning Community who believe in the power of unity, shared experiences, and fostering positive change within our university campus and beyond.

Together, let us ensure that Somerset Hall remains the heart of our vibrant community!
