Save Snapper, stop Kina Barrens. Lower the daily catch limit per active fisher for Finfish

The issue

All New Zealanders will feel the effects if Snapper, Porae and Red moki continue to be over-fished. Over-fishing creates an unbalanced  marine ecosystem where Kina overpopulates and eats all the kelp. This kelp is globally responsible for sucking up 200 million tonnes of carbon per year and helps our fight against climate change so why are we just letting Kina eat it? Why are we still over-fishing?

There is a lot at stake. If nothing changes our beautiful marine environments and snorkelling areas (considered some of the most prestigious in the world) will be gone. They'll be replaced by something not so gorgeous or eco-friendly: Kina barrens.

Now is the time to act. The current daily catch limit for Finfish has made it so that the population of Kina's predators has plummeted. Not doing anything now will mean the not only plummet but disappear from our water all together; Kina will be able to overpopulate and all our kelp forests ( which are already threatened by a host of other human activities) will definitely disappear all together.
