As a patron and supporter of Skateworld Tacoma, I am devastated to learn of the impending closure of this beloved local business in Tacoma, Washington. The decision by the landlords to not extend the lease, citing a desire to reclaim the space for a personal business venture of one of the property owners, has left many loyal customers heartbroken. 

Skateworld is more than just a skating rink; it's an essential part of our community's fabric that has provided countless hours of joy, healthy activity, and a sense of belonging for people who may feel isolated, especially following the pandemic lockdowns. For the past 5 years, it has contributed positively to both mental and physical health for all ages. This is a place that makes people feel that they belong. It is especially important for our youth who need wholesome local activities.

From date nights to birthday parties, to weekly and even near daily trips, patrons come from near and far to enjoy the upbeat family friendly environment that the management and staff have so carefully created. Their disappointment at this abrupt decision is shared by us all. I believe Skateworld Tacoma has been a light in our community in a time where it was desperately needed. With the closing of other local skating rinks, Skateworld Tacoma remains one of the last ones within a reasonable commute for many patrons.

According to data from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), regular physical activity like roller skating can help keep your thinking, learning, and judgment skills sharp as you age (source: CDC). By closing down Skateworld we are not only losing a cherished local business but also an avenue for maintaining our health.

We urge those in power - the landlords, local officials - anyone who can influence this decision - to reconsider their stance on not renewing the lease of Skateworld Tacoma. Let's preserve this valuable asset in our community which brings joy and promotes healthy living among its patrons and our community.
