I have dedicated over two decades to rescuing dogs in dire need, and during this time, I have encountered countless dogs suffering from severely painful medical conditions. Despite their hardships, many of these dogs could be handled and rehabilitated because of their good temperaments. However, an alarming trend persists in shelters where dogs with handling issues are labeled and at constant risk, even if they have the potential to be managed by professional handlers like groomers, veterinarians, or trainers.

An example of this is Simba, a cocker spaniel with the animal ID number #A591306, currently at the San Bernardino City, CA animal shelter.  https://fb.watch/GtsI0rGLHt/?fs=e

Due to perceived handling issues, many dogs like him face uncertain futures, where their capacity to improve with the right care is overshadowed by fear of potential risks. Yet, I firmly believe that these dogs deserve a chance to demonstrate their ability to adapt and thrive under knowledgeable guidance.  A dog with a bite history can have a bright future.

In many cases, the temperament of dogs in pain or distress is not indicative of their true nature. Dogs hit by cars or suffering from untreated conditions often become scapegoats of misunderstanding, where their painful situation is misinterpreted as unmanageability. However, with proper medical attention and patient handling, success stories like those I've witnessed firsthand show these animals can lead healthy, happy lives.

Therefore, I urge the San Bernardino City Shelter to reconsider the protocols for evaluating dogs labeled with handling issues, particularly those with medical conditions. By integrating evaluations conducted by animal behaviorists and collaborating with rescue organizations, we can better identify suitable rehabilitative pathways for dogs at risk of euthanasia.

Let's open more pathways for dogs to find environments where their true nature can flourish through care and appropriate management. With your help, we can change the fate of many dogs who are otherwise denied a second chance.

Please sign this petition to support the cause and provide a brighter future for dogs at the San Bernardino City Shelter and seal their chance to find loving homes.
