The Issue

We, a group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, are deeply concerned about the future of our school, Shepherdstown Middle School. The imminent cut by the county's BOE to our choir program due to budget issues threatens not only our creativity and enthusiasm for school but also the job of our beloved teacher, Ms. Kelly Bennett. The choir program and Ms. Bennett work hand-in-hand to infuse our school community with joy and inspiration through music. But all this is at risk.

We, the undersigned students, parents, alumni, and community members, respectfully urge you to reverse the decision to lay off Ms. Kelly Bennett, the choir teacher at Shepherdstown Middle School.

Ms. Bennet is far more than a teacher—she is a mentor, a builder of confidence, and a source of inspiration for her students. Through her passion for music and her dedication to the choir program, she has helped shape well-rounded individuals and fostered a school environment rich in creativity, inclusion, and community.

According to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, arts education—like the kind Ms. Bennet provides—develops essential life skills including empathy, cultural awareness, communication, and emotional resilience. It plays a critical role in strengthening school engagement, improving student mental health, and promoting civic connection. In the wake of the pandemic and ongoing youth mental health struggles, removing arts programs is not just harmful—it’s short-sighted.

Studies show that students involved in the arts are more likely to attend school, succeed academically, and stay engaged in their communities later in life. Choir is not a luxury—it’s a necessity for student growth and wellbeing.

We urge the board to:

Reevaluate budget priorities with community input.

Consider creative alternatives before cutting arts programs.

Preserve Ms. Bennet’s position and the SMS choir program for the benefit of current and future students.

Let’s protect the voices of our students by keeping the one who helps them find theirs.

Sincerely,
Izzy Warner + Supporters]
