Save Sharmon Crescent's Beloved Green Space

Save Sharmon Crescent's Beloved Green Space
The Issue
In the heart of Leicester's community, is “The Green” on Sharmon Crescent which has been a cherished haven for generations. I played on this very green in the 1950s, my children and grandchild spent countless joyful hours there, and to this day, I am fortunate to live right across from it. This green space isn't just a patch of grass; it's where our neighborhood comes alive. It's where families gather in harmonious evenings, children laugh on swings and slides, and both young lads and older men come together for a friendly game of football.
Yet, this integral part of our community is under threat. Leicester City Council is planning to replace half of this vibrant green area with a football and basketball pitch surrounded by high fencing, therefore erasing a large portion of the green space that we all cherish. This proposal will deprive our children of space to play freely and threaten the community spirit that thrives here.
Leicester City is known for valuing its green spaces and promoting community well-being, yet this proposed construction goes against these very ideals. The Braunstone Frith area, where Sharmon Crescent is located, has a rich history of being a family-friendly environment, and losing this green would be a step back.
High fences and designated sports pitches might seem like progress, but they constrain the free, open play that a green space provides. Instead of removing the green, we could invest in improving the existing facilities to accommodate all ages and activities, ensuring that Sharmon Crescent continues to be a gathering place for everyone.
Please join us in asking the Leicester council to reconsider their plans and preserve this vital community resource. By signing this petition, you help protect a precious piece of our neighborhood's heritage and future. Let's ensure that Sharmon Crescent remains a thriving, welcoming space for generations to come.
