SAVE SEATTLE'S U-DISTRICT ICON NESS FLOWERS BUILDING -SAY NO TO MCDONALD'S

The Issue

Ness Flowers was a Seattle institution for over 50 years, operated and owned by a lovely local family, the Peha family.  Ness Flowers supplied a bit of color to our residents, they laughed with them, they celebrated with them, they mourned with them. While Ness Flowers has been long gone, and while the building had housed a scandalous bar, it doesn't deduct from its historical value as a friendly reminder of a simpler time.

The Ness Flower building has been a neighborhood beacon, a friendly icon, a welcome reminder to stop and smell the flowers. Providing familiar color and character to a changing neighborhood, the building holds historical value and sentimental value.

McDonald's is slated to take over the building, with no word on if this renovation also includes the beloved Cedar's which operates next door, which has provided Mediterranean staples since the mid 70s. McDonald's has no business in the U-District,and already owns a restaurant near U-Village just down the road. McDonald's will destroy the historical integrity of Ness, and will also surely bring congestion and possible extra crime to an area that already struggles with such bottlenecks.

McDonald's has failed on "the Ave," a local nickname for University Way before. We must not let them ruin a beloved U-District location, especially when the business is likely to fail within just a few years.

Don't let the colorful Ness Flower building be overtaken by McDonald's grey.

While the Ness building shouldn't remain vacant, it should be protected, and should be taken over by a local business who values its history and importance to the community.

While we would love to purchase the building and renovate it into a local flower and novelty shop or cafe, the originators of this cause currently do not have the money required.

Tell McDonald's we're NOT lovin' it, and that they need to go elsewhere. By signing this petition we call on McDonald's and all appropriate officials to block McDonald's from operating out of the Ness Flowers building. This action is meant to preserve the historical integrity of the building, while also giving the chance for a local to operate a business in the building instead. We ask that McDonald's look elsewhere and that Flowers be preserved for decades to come.

People complain that old Seattle is gone, while doing nothing to fight for the reminders that remain.
