Save SDSU Student Housing and Stop Noise Violation Fine Increase

Save SDSU Student Housing and Stop Noise Violation Fine Increase

The Issue

There are currently 33,000 students attend San Diego State University, yet there are less than 5,000 beds on campus.  The remaining 28,000 students live off campus.  With only a 1% vacancy rate for apartments in San Diego, apartment rents are much more expensive than shared housing.  The homes near campus are within walking distance to classes and are more than 30% less expensive.

The City Council will also be voting on significantly increasing fines for code violations from $2,500 to $10,000 per violation. For a structure, the maximum allowable charge would increase from $250,000 to $400,00 per day. A single person can be charged up to $10,000 for a violation such as a second noise complaint within 30 days, and a single house can be charged up to $400,000 collectively.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, are opposed to the College Area Community Character Preservation Ordinance and the Increased Code Enforcement Administrative Civil Penalties Ordinance, which would significantly reduce the affordable housing units available within walking distance to the San Diego State University Campus and cause potential catastrophic financial consequences for students.
