Save Rowan Medical Building Kennedy Pharmacy: Protect Patient-Centered Care
The Issue
Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine teaches us to provide patient-centered care, to advocate for disadvantaged populations, and to reduce barriers to health access. Yet, the recent decision to force the Rowan Medical Building Pharmacy to close within 30 days directly undermines these values.
This independent pharmacy, owned by Ewa and Gus, has served the community for years, during which they have built critical relationships. Relocating in such a short time is impossible, and this will effectively end their business — one of the few remaining independent pharmacies in our area.
Why This Matters
First, it provides critical access for vulnerable patients. Many of the patients seen at Rowan’s clinics are elderly, have complex conditions, or lack transportation. Having a pharmacy on-site allows them to see their doctor, complete lab work, and pick up prescriptions in one trip. Without it, many will face new and unnecessary barriers to care. These patients are being forced to find a new pharmacy without any support.
Second, the pharmacy is a center for community and student support. The pharmacy provides snacks, supplies, and healthcare items for Rowan medical students while modeling what integrated, accessible healthcare should look like. Every Wednesday when first years have OMM the pharmacy sells special snacks. Further, they are a part of a program that allows them to equip community with free and anonymous Narcan. The Pharmacy Instagram regularly features students and professors alike.
Perhaps most importantly, the pharmacy addresses the local healthcare gap. With the recent closure of Rite Aid in Stratford, the loss of this pharmacy will leave patients with even fewer local options. With our school's emphasis on community healthcare, closing the pharmacy is antithetical to our mission.
A true partner in care: Ewa and Gus are not just business owners — they are trusted members of our community who embody the personal, community-driven care that Rowan teaches us to value.
As future osteopathic physicians, we are taught to advocate for patients and communities. Closing this pharmacy contradicts Rowan’s own mission and harms the very people we are training to serve.
We call on Rowan University and the Rowan Medical Building leadership to reverse this decision and allow the Rowan Medical Building Pharmacy to remain open.
Please sign and share this petition to protect patient-centered care and keep this vital pharmacy open.
