The Issue

For over 35 years, Rick—a quiet, kind Richmond local—has tended a community garden nestled in the alley between North Mulberry and Hanover Street in the Fan District. This hidden gem, full of blooming flowers, bees, and benches, has been open to all: neighbors, wanderers, students, and anyone in need of a peaceful green space.

Now, with new ownership of a nearby property complex, this beloved garden is at risk of being torn down.

This garden is not just plants—it’s living history. It’s a space that has nourished the soul of the community for decades. It’s where neighbors meet, children play, and countless Richmonders find peace. Rick has never asked for praise or payment. He has simply given this gift to all of us, every day, for free.

We, the undersigned, urge city leaders, developers, and all involved stakeholders to protect and preserve this space. We are asking for a commitment to:

Halt demolition of the garden
Engage with the community before any development proceeds
Explore solutions that allow the garden to remain, either as public land, a land trust, or an integrated green space
Let’s honor what Rick has built. Let’s protect the garden that has quietly held our community for generations. Once it’s gone, it can’t be replaced.
