The Issue

For over 35 years, Rick—a quiet, kind Richmond local—has tended a community garden nestled in the alley between North Mulberry and Hanover Street in the Fan District. This hidden gem, full of blooming flowers, bees, and benches, has been open to all: neighbors, wanderers, students, and anyone in need of a peaceful green space.

Now, with new ownership of a nearby property complex, this beloved garden is at risk of being torn down.

This garden is not just plants—it’s living history. It’s a space that has nourished the soul of the community for decades. It’s where neighbors meet, children play, and countless Richmonders find peace. Rick has never asked for praise or payment. He has simply given this gift to all of us, every day, for free.

We, the undersigned, urge city leaders, developers, and all involved stakeholders to protect and preserve this space. We are asking for a commitment to:

Halt demolition of the garden
Engage with the community before any development proceeds
Explore solutions that allow the garden to remain, either as public land, a land trust, or an integrated green space
Let’s honor what Rick has built. Let’s protect the garden that has quietly held our community for generations. Once it’s gone, it can’t be replaced.

This is my favorite garden in Richmond, hands down. Whenever my depression has been at its worst I’ve found myself over and over again taking solo trips specifically to this garden to think. Lots of soul searching and personal healing has happened because of the aid of this beautiful place. This is a very special place for me and I would be devasta...

I live backing up to this alley and the garden was why I moved in- I’ve been here 6 years now and it’s a true gem. Don’t let developers kill what makes Richmond special!

I can personally attest to the joy and peace this garden brings not only to residents in the immediate area but also to those from surrounding neighborhoods. At any time of day, if you walk through the garden, you’ll see people marveling at the dedication and care evident in the meticulous maintenance of the plants. The table and chairs nestled in...
