Save RGNIYD: Reinstate the courses that were closed arbitrarily
The Issue
We would like to draw your attention to the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD) (Institution of National Importance by the Act of Parliament No.35/2012), Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, which has faced significant challenges under the current BJP government. This situation impacts the core mission of the institute, which is to promote the overall development of the youth in our country. The government has discontinued specialised courses such as the M.A. in Local Governance and Development, Gender Studies, and M.A. in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship. These programs were designed with a youth-centric approach, aiming to equip young people to address pressing socio-developmental issues that affect the nation's progress.
RGNIYD has newly introduced courses such as M.Sc. in Computer Science (with specialisations in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Data Science, and Cyber Security), as well as M.Sc. in Mathematics, and has recruited new faculty members. However, despite advertising in the CUET PG portal in the current academic year, they have once again discontinued these courses. From 2014 to 2025, the RGNIYD administration has scrapped a total of 16 courses without any prior notification.
RGNIYD is recognised as an Institute of National Importance, established by an act of Parliament and named after the late Congress leader and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. However, the institute's reputation has suffered significantly, leading to concerns among prospective students about enrolling on campus.
1. Reinstate master's courses, including M.Sc. in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Data Science, Cyber Security), M.Sc. in Mathematics, MA in Gender Studies, MA in Local Governance and M.A. in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
2. The appointment of a Director and Registrar, positions that have been vacant for an extended period, is affecting the everyday functions of RGNIYD.
3. The appointment of a sports dean and staff, as the institute, which operates under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, currently has no personnel dedicated to sports.
4. The provision of a boys' hostel facility at the Regional Centre of RGNIYD in Chandigarh.
