Save Recycled Reads from Closing in Austin, TX

Save Recycled Reads from Closing in Austin, TX
The Issue
Recycled Reads holds a special place in my heart. Having worked and shopped there, I discovered a passion for reuse and learned how many valuable things can find new homes. This passion now fuels my art; after all, if a book can find one more home, isn't that better than seeing it go to waste?
Austin, a city known for its rich cultural heritage and commitment to sustainability, stands on the brink of losing a true gem. Recycled Reads, the Austin Public Library's cherished secondhand bookstore, faces imminent closure due to a multimillion-dollar budget shortfall that city leaders are striving to resolve.
Since its establishment in 2009, Recycled Reads has been an integral part of Austin's zero-waste initiative. It serves as a haven for books no longer needed by the library and a treasure trove of donations from the community where their wonderful books can extend their lives.
The impending closure of Recycled Reads represents not just the loss of a bookstore, but the erosion of a community commitment to sustainability and education. By providing affordable books and promoting sustainable practices, this establishment has played a pivotal role in fostering a culture of reuse and environmental consciousness in Austin.
The question to ask is: What happens when communities lose spaces that encourage sustainable practices and shared knowledge? The shuttering of Recycled Reads would deprive countless people of a place where learning and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
We propose a solution: instead of shutting down this invaluable resource, let's find a way to integrate it more deeply into Austin's budget as a vital component of our city’s zero-waste promise. Alternatives could include community fundraising events, donations from local businesses, or partnerships with environmental organizations committed to sustainability. Possibly Austin Resource Recovery can lend funding.
Recycled Reads has also been in a non-city owned location since it was founded, which there are empty city buildings also on the Cap Metro routes that can be repurposed to fit these needs.
Losing Recycled Reads would be detrimental, not only to those of us who cherish its mission but to the entire Austin community that benefits from its existence. Stand with us in urging Austin city leaders to prioritize Recycled Reads in their budget considerations.
Please consider signing this petition to ensure Recycled Reads remains open, continuing to enrich our city and uphold our environmental commitments. Your support is crucial in preserving this treasure for future generations.
