SAVE RAMSGATE’S EASTCLIFF BANDSTAND

SAVE RAMSGATE’S EASTCLIFF BANDSTAND

The Issue

The beautiful bandstand which stands proudly on top of the cliff is currently “owned” by Thanet District Council.
Proudly standing, blissfully unaware of the neglect it has suffered and the decay that is being unashamedly allowed by it’s owner.

if you own something you look after it? Maintain it? Unfortunately not in the case of this beautiful grade 2 listed building.

Imagine taking a picnic and a chair and sitting and listening to music, or visiting a market there, the possibilities are endless.

Just look at the packed programmes of other bandstands..Broadstairs, The Oval Bandstand in Cliftonville (incidentally the charity behind it managed to get TDC to relinquish their ownership and it now thrives) Deal, Hythe and Ellington Park

Locals may not know but this bandstand is the only open-air polished dance floor that you will find on a cliff top anywhere in the world.

When the new bandstand, designed by the borough engineer R D Brimmell, was opened, it was reported that the dancefloor was 'specially prepared concrete polished to a mirror-like surface' (Kent Times, 1st March 1939) and had to be re-waxed every spring.

This beauty needs preserving.

We live in a world where everything is battery powered and portable so no need for expensive lights to be installed nor sound systems.

Because of its neglect and listed status, it would need some specialist attention but not a lot more than that.

TDC…. Let it go. Give it to people who care about it. Tell us what we need to do.

Allow it to be loved and used
