Save PUSD Elementary Music Program and Middle School A/B Period!

The Issue

Hey everyone! Our school district, Pleasanton Unified, is thinking about some major changes that could really hurt our music programs and middle school schedules — and this affects thousands of students. Here’s what’s happening:

1    Cutting Elementary Music: Over 4,000 students in grades 1–5 could lose their music program. Music isn’t just about playing instruments; it helps kids learn reading, math, and teamwork skills in a fun way.

2    Removing A/B Period for 6th and 7th Grades: If they get rid of A/B periods, students will have fewer elective choices (like Band/Strings or Dual Immersion). These classes are super important for creativity, cultural understanding, and overall personal growth.

Why This Matters:

    •    Our award-winning music programs might lose funding and space.

    •    Jazz Band and Dual Immersion students would have almost no flexibility in their schedules.

    •    Music rooms would become overcrowded and less effective for learning.

    •    PUSD is known for balancing academics with arts and culture — these cuts would seriously weaken that.

Music education and varied electives aren’t just extras; they’re a huge part of a well-rounded education. PUSD’s music programs are recognized across the country, and Dual Immersion builds important cultural awareness. Taking these away will hurt students, families, and the whole community.

We’re asking the PUSD Board of Trustees and Administration to:

    •    Keep the Elementary Music Program and its 6.5 full-time music teachers.

    •    Keep the A/B period in middle schools so students don’t lose out on electives that motivate them to learn.

Sign This Petition To: Show the PUSD Board that music education and flexible scheduling matter to all of us. Together, we can protect these vital programs for our district.
