Save Pueblo's City Park Tennis and Pickleball Programs

Save Pueblo's City Park Tennis and Pickleball Programs
The Issue
I am writing this petition out of a deep personal connection and concern for the valuable programs that have served the youth of Pueblo for decades. Growing up, I had the privilege of being part of the City Park Tennis Program, where I discovered my passion for tennis under the guidance of Ed Francis. This program not only shaped my skills in the sport but also taught me life lessons that I carry to this day. Tennis is a unique sport that offers lifelong benefits and can be played solo or with others, making it accessible and rewarding. And Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the world!
Unfortunately, the mayor has announced that there will be no city funding for tennis or pickleball programs that serve our young population. These programs serve Hundreds of our youth each and every season! The tennis program, in particular, has been instrumental in providing opportunities and engaging activities for youth since at least 1960. They have become a cornerstone of our city’s culture, hosting numerous high school tennis tournaments, including the State 3A and 4A Championships, and nurturing players who go on to excel both athletically and academically. Additionally these tournaments are economic drivers for the city, with dozens of out-of-city schools visiting for each tournament and many staying overnight, spending their money in our hotels and at our restaurants! The city park tennis program is THE feeder program to the high schools and there is a very real threat that without this program the high school teams can eventually dry up, and there would be no more incentive to host these lucrative tournaments!
Eliminating these programs poses a significant loss to the community, especially considering they operate at a low cost with high returns in terms of personal development, community engagement and tax generation. In a time when Pueblo’s youth face numerous challenges, cutting programs that focus on their growth and well-being is counterproductive. These programs enhance not just athletic skills, but also teach important life skills that contribute to a well-rounded upbringing.
We urge the city leadership to reconsider this decision and to continue funding the City Park Tennis and Pickleball Programs. Investing in our youth is investing in the future of Pueblo. Let us uphold our tradition of supporting sports and activities that make our city vibrant and inclusive.
Join me in telling our mayor how crucial these programs are by signing this petition. Help us preserve and continue the legacy of the City Park Tennis and Pickleball Programs for generations to come.
And please join us at the City Park Courts on Friday April 24th at 6pm to RALLY the city into making the right choice and reversing course on this shortsighted decision!!
