Pickup soccer has been a vibrant part of UC Berkeley’s campus life for years. Hundreds of students and community members gather weekly to play soccer, build friendships, and stay active.

Until recently, our community played at Maxwell Field. Since its closure to the public, we’ve moved to La Loma (the turf field above the Upper Hearst Parking Structure). Unfortunately, this field is not designed for soccer:

• The turf and goals are built for field hockey, not soccer.
• Trash frequently accumulates and the benches are broken.
• Most urgently, there are no lights. Once the sun sets early in the evening, pickup soccer will no longer be possible.

Pickup soccer is more than just a game. It’s about health, well-being, inclusion, and community. With no other options on campus, we are at risk of losing our only remaining space for this activity.

We are asking UC Berkeley Recreation & Well-Being and Cal Athletics to:

1. Reopen Maxwell Field to the public or
2. Provide a safe, well-lit, and properly maintained field where students and the community can continue to play.
