Save Petone's Grandstand, the heart of sport and recreation in the community since 1899

The issue

For over 100 years, every week, year round, hundreds, sometimes thousands, descend on the Petone Recreation Ground to enjoy sports or support their friends and whanau. The Grandstand and changing rooms play host to junior and senior sportspeople from the Hutt Valley and the wider Wellington region, and provide good facilities where athletes can change and shower. More importantly, the stand offers a special covered viewing area shielded from the elements, allowing supporters, especially older members of the community and young families to comfortably watch sports.

Petone’s Grandstand is more than just a structure; it is a hub of community spirit. It represents decades of local sporting history and has been a cornerstone for fostering community connection and encouraging active lifestyles. From rugby & league club & highschool fixtures, marching competitions, school athletics, to cricket matches, it supports a diverse range of activities helping to build camaraderie and promote physical well-being among people of all ages.

The proposal to redevelop or potentially demolish the Grandstand threatens not only a piece of our local heritage but also risks marginalizing the many who depend on its facilities for sport, recreation, and social engagement. The benefits of sport especially with our youth are numerous and well known.

Option 1 is a full repair/restrengthening
Option 2 is restrengthening without a covered roof
Option 3 is demolish

All options are roughly around the $3 million mark.

Supporting Hutt City Council's Option 1, which focuses on preserving and maintaining this significant local landmark, will ensure that we keep the spirit of community sport alive in Petone for future generations. Retaining the Grandstand will secure its status as a cherished venue, enabling continued access to quality sports facilities and shelter during the crucial moments our teams and supporters need it most.

With Wellington franchises moving games away from Sky Stadium, Petone's central location combined with Jackson Street's bars and restaurants, 2 train stations and bus routes, a functional stand gives us the opportunity to host our provincial teams in the future, giving a much needed boost to local businesses and hospitality in the Lower Hutt area.

Preserving the Grandstand is a crucial step towards respecting our community’s past while investing in its future. Let’s rally together to safeguard this important piece of our cultural and physical landscape.

Please join us in advocating for the protection and re-strengthening of Petone's Grandstand by signing this petition. Let's ensure it continues to serve our community in the years to come.
