The Issue

My daughter will be directly affected by the current educational budget cuts in Washington. As a budding visual artist, she's already building her portfolio for college art school, a crucial step in her future career. However, the county's decision to slash arts and other essential education programs puts her dreams at risk.

It's not just my daughter who stands to lose; dedicated teachers who have become my friends face the threat of losing their jobs. Many of these educators are nearing retirement and have devoted decades to nurturing our children. Instead of offering them the respect and security they deserve, the county seems intent on forcing them out, avoiding their rightful pay. This not only affects the teachers but also jeopardizes the quality of education our children, including non-verbal autistic students who benefit so immensely from art programs, receive.

These changes threaten to eliminate vital programs from our schools. A well-rounded education includes more than the core subjects. Foreign languages, essential for college readiness, and the arts, crucial for cognitive and social development, should not be optional.

It's been reported that when schools integrate arts into their curriculum, students see a rise in both academic performance and personal confidence. The National Endowment for the Arts notes that low-income students who engage in the arts are more than three times as likely to earn a bachelor’s degree compared to those who do not participate.

We need immediate action to prevent these cuts. Parents, educators, and community members must unite to advocate for a budget that reflects the importance of a comprehensive educational experience. We urge legislators and the educational board to reconsider the proposed cuts and prioritize investments in sustained educational growth and employee security.

By signing this petition, you support preserving teachers' jobs and maintaining programs that foster artistic expression and critical thinking skills vital for our children's futures. Stand with us to ensure that all students in Washington have the opportunity to benefit from a complete and diverse educational program. Sign now to make your voice heard!
