Save Palatine Stables: Keep Horses in Our Community

Save Palatine Stables: Keep Horses in Our Community

The Issue

Palatine Stables, a cherished community resource since the 1950s, is of immense value to the community and offers numerous benefits beyond riding and horse care. Unfortunately, the Palatine Park District has not been honest or transparent in its actions to close the barn. Without warning or accurate reasoning, the district notified the stable on May 13th of its decision to close the facility. This decision affects over 60 horses, staff, trainers, and thousands of riders in the community.

Palatine Stables contributes more to the Village of Palatine than the cost it takes to maintain the buildings. The summer sessions and therapeutic riding programs are consistently waitlisted, reflecting their high demand and popularity. It is a beloved part of the Palatine community and beyond, attracting individuals from all over the Chicagoland area to participate in its programs. Keeping Palatine Stables open is crucial for preserving these invaluable contributions and ensuring continued benefits for the community.

Please sign our petition by June 9th for the June 10, 2024 community meeting.

Why Palatine Stables Should Stay Open

  1. Holistic Development: Palatine Stables contribute significantly to the physical, mental, and social development of individuals who ride, especially children. The riding lessons, camps, and therapeutic riding sessions are essential for fostering a sense of responsibility, discipline, and confidence in young riders.
  2. Therapeutic Programs: The therapeutic riding sessions in partnership with NWSRA offer holistic growth opportunities that are hard to replicate elsewhere. Students experience improvements in muscle strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, endurance, sensory registration, visual/spatial orientation, motor control, rhythm/timing, physical stimulation, and attentiveness.
  3. Community Engagement: Palatine Stables is a vibrant hub for community engagement, providing a unique space for social interaction, local competition, and shared experiences. Its inclusive nature ensures that people from various backgrounds can benefit, promoting diversity and unity within our community.
  4. Educational Value: The stable provides an invaluable educational experience, teaching individuals about animal care, responsibility, and the complexities of equestrian sports. This hands-on learning is a significant complement to traditional education, offering practical skills and knowledge that are beneficial for all ages.
  5. Recreational and Emotional Well-being: Beyond the therapeutic aspects, horseback riding at Palatine Stables offers a recreational outlet that is not just crucial, but essential for emotional well-being and mental health. The stable provides a much-needed escape and source of joy for those dealing with stress or anxiety or simply looking for a positive recreational activity.
  6. Community and Family Bonding: Palatine Stables is a place where families can come together, participate in events, and enjoy shared experiences. This fosters stronger family bonds and a tighter-knit community.

In conclusion, Palatine Stables is more than just a riding facility; it is a cornerstone of our community’s wellness and development. The combination of structured programs and the inherent benefits of horseback riding make it an indispensable asset that should be preserved and supported.
